Wood glue for furniture: what the bottles and the editors say

PVA, liquid hide and where the waterproof claim actually comes from. I have not glued a joint.

How I built this guide

Sources I read. Titebond’s comparison table, Rockler, McFeely’s, and Fitzpatrick in Fine Woodworking (2019). The 2007 glue-strength test was not a page whose numbers I could verify.

What I cross-checked. Which claims are the maker’s and which are an editor’s.

What I could not verify. A food-contact claim for Titebond III. I am not stating one.

Most sources suggest this if the joint is tight and indoors; skip it if you need to open it later, or you are about to fill a gap and call it structure.

Titebond III

Budget to mid. Maker or shop pages, not an independent test.

Rockler and Titebond, both commercial pages, describe a long open time and a waterproof claim. Megan Fitzpatrick in Fine Woodworking keeps it for wet work and prefers hide glue indoors. Listings on Amazon.es and Amazon.com.mx were open on 28 Oct 2026.

It is not reversible. I did not confirm a food-contact claim.

Titebond Original / II

Budget. Maker or shop pages, not an independent test.

McFeely’s, Rockler and Titebond agree on the water ratings. All three are commercial. Original is interior. II tolerates occasional moisture.

No independent review in what I could read.

Old Brown Glue

Mid. One source, no second opinion.

Fitzpatrick says she uses liquid hide glue for most interior work and prefers Old Brown Glue to Titebond’s liquid hide.

Warm it, and the bottle has a shelf life. One detailed source.

Titebond Liquid Hide

Budget. The sources disagree. Read the notes in the guide.

Rockler and Fitzpatrick agree it is reversible. Fitzpatrick ranks it under Old Brown Glue.

Reverses less cleanly, in that comparison.

Most interior furniture in the sources is a tight joint and a PVA. I have not closed one. The waterproof word on a bottle is not a rating until the bottle names one.

What the experts say

Medium. The open times come from the maker. The preference for hide glue indoors is one editor.

Titebond’s own table, a commercial source, lists Original at a short open time, II a bit shorter, III at 8–10 minutes, and liquid hide at 10.1

Rockler calls III completely waterproof. That is also a shop.2 Megan Fitzpatrick says she uses liquid hide for most interior work and keeps III for pieces that will actually get wet.3

What owners report

I do not have an owner pattern I could read in full for these bottles. The 2007 Fine Woodworking strength test included some of them. I could not verify the numbers, so they are not in the verdict.

Where they disagree

Fitzpatrick and the commercial pages are not having the same argument. The shops describe water resistance. She describes which glue she wants to be able to open later. Old Brown Glue is her preference over Titebond liquid hide. That ranking is one essay.

My take

A tight indoor joint: a PVA labeled for wood, and clamps for the time on that bottle. Occasional water: read whether the bottle claims a Type II or a waterproof rating, and do not promote a slogan into a standard. A joint you may knock apart: liquid hide, with Fitzpatrick’s caveat that the bottles are not equal. I left polyurethane out. I did not have a sourced pair of pros and cons worth a card.

The first place this glue shows up in a project is the cutting board.

Glue needs clamps. Which ones, and how many, is in clamps for a first shop.

Common questions

Is polyurethane stronger?

I did not find a sourced comparison that says so for a tight wood joint. A gap is still a gap.

Can I use this on a cutting board?

I did not confirm a food-contact line for Titebond III. Read the current FAQ before it touches food.
