Card scraper or sandpaper: whose advice is a test, and whose is a shop

Sellers on cards, one video on mesh discs. I have not turned a hook or sanded a top.

How I built this guide

Sources I read. Paul Sellers, Highland Woodworking, Canadian Woodworking, Project Farm.

What I cross-checked. Which Bahco link 404’d, so it is not on the page.

What I could not verify. Project Farm’s Mirka result. I did not record it, so it is not here.

Most sources suggest this if the problem is tear-out on a flat and you will learn the hook; skip it if the surface is a curve, or a finish schedule names a grit.

Bahco 474 card

Budget. More than one source agrees.

Paul Sellers says Bahco scrapers are good. Highland Woodworking, which sells them, says the old Sandvik-style card holds a burr. I am not linking the Amazon.es ASIN that 404’d.

Sellers would still buy the Veritas set first.

Veritas card set and burnisher

Mid. One source, no second opinion.

Sellers: buy the Veritas set for the thicknesses, and a burnisher. One voice.

Not an Amazon product. Lee Valley.

Mirka Abranet

Mid. One source, no second opinion.

Canadian Woodworking notes the wide grit range. Mesh discs cost more than paper. A 125 mm pack on Amazon.es was open on 28 Oct 2026.

Price. One evaluation I could record.

Diablo SandNet

Budget to mid. One source, no second opinion.

Project Farm scored the finish well and called it affordable. Canadian Woodworking only describes the range.

5 inch only, in that description.

3M Cubitron

Mid to premium. One source, no second opinion.

Best average finish in the Project Farm video I used. I did not search a listing.

One test.

Sandpaper scratches. A card scraper, when the hook is there, is supposed to take a shaving. I have not made that shaving. The hook sequence below is the one Sellers and the older shop texts teach. It is not a log of my afternoon.

What the experts say

Medium on the method. Low on which card to buy: Sellers and a shop that sells Bahco agree it is decent, and Sellers still points at Veritas first.

Sellers says Bahco scrapers are good, and that he would buy the Veritas set for the different thicknesses, plus a burnisher, not a random screwdriver.1

Highland, which sells the Bahco 474, says the old Sandvik-style card holds a burr. That page is a store.2

On discs, Project Farm’s averages put 3M Cubitron ahead of Diablo SandNet on finish, and called Diablo affordable.3

Canadian Woodworking describes Mirka’s grit range. I did not record Project Farm’s Mirka score, so I am not inventing it.

What owners report

I do not have an owner pattern I opened myself for these cards. The Bahco Amazon.es ASIN in an earlier note 404’d on 28 Oct 2026. It is not linked.

Where they disagree

Sellers’ first buy is Veritas. Highland’s page is about the card they stock. Those can both be true. Mesh discs cost more than paper. That is a price complaint, not a finish score.

My take

Learn the hook if the problem is a flat with tear-out. Buy a real burnisher. If you want one card that two different kinds of page will name, it is the Bahco 474, with the shop-page caveat. If you believe Sellers’ shopping list, it is the Veritas set, which was not on Amazon. Sandpaper stays for curves and for any finish that names a grit. A sander is that, with a motor: the sander note.

File or stone the edge square. Hone the faces, then the edge. Draw the burnisher flat, a few strokes. Turn a small hook, a few degrees, not a huge burr. A shaving means it worked. Dust means start over. That is the taught sequence. I have not confirmed it with my hands.

Common questions

Does a scraper replace sandpaper?

On a flat with tear-out, Sellers treats it as the better cut. On a curve, no. I have not tried the difference.

Why dust instead of a shaving?

The teaching is that the hook is missing. I am repeating that, not reporting a card of mine.
